Realistic and authentic photographs of active people model how to practice cognitive-motor skills leading to healthy behaviors and a higher quality of life. Bilingual story lines encourage people of all cultural backgrounds to interact and speak with others to promote healthy living in a variety of situations and environments. Electronic Texts for Health Literacy© demonstrate and promote the ongoing development of oral language, written language, and body language integration through Habits of Health and Habits of Mind (Ubbes, 2008).</text>

            <text>Five Healthy Habits
by Christi Hawthorn and Chris Yakkel

Being in Kindergarten is a lot of fun! We learn many new things!
We learn our ABC’s…..
And our 1-2-3’s.
We also learn how to take good care of our bodies (cuerpos).
We learned five (cinco) things to help keep us healthy.
The first thing you do to have a healthy body (cuerpo sano) is keep safe (seguro) and use good hygiene (higiene).
There are many things we do at Noah’s Ark to stay safe (seguro).
We walk in the hallways….
And we stay with our teachers on field trips.
What do you do to stay safe (seguro)?
There are also many things we do to have good hygiene (higiene). We wash our hands many times a day (rub and dub dub).
We also make sure to brush our teeth twice a day. That is why our smiles are so bright and white (Bling, bling!).
What other things do you do to keep clean?
The second thing you do to be a healthy body is have good relationships (relaciones bueno).
That is why we always follow the golden rule.
Emily shares her Barbie with Sarah!
Zak gets the glue for his friend, Chelsea!
What do you do to have good relationships (relaciones) with your friends?
Eating nutritious (nutritivo) foods is very important to having a healthy body (cuerpo sano), too.
This is the third thing we do to have healthy bodies (cuerpos sano)!
We love to drink orange juice (jugo) in the morning! Gulp, gulp!
Corina eats a banana for a healthy snack (bocado sano). Chomp, chomp!
What healthy and nutritious (nutrivito) foods do you like to eat?
The fourth healthy habit we do is exercise and play (juego)! This is our favorite one!
We love to play (jugar) in our centers!
We love to move our bodies!
How do you play (juego) and exercise at your home?
But all that exercise and play can make us Kindergarteners tired!
So, the fifth thing we do is get plenty of rest (descanso).
We have a quiet time everyday!
Some of us watch a movie…..
And some of us sleep!
How do you make sure to get plenty of rest (descanso) everyday?
Those are the five (cinco) things we do to have healthy bodies!
Let’s review the Five Healthy Habits again!
1. Be safe and have good hygiene.
2. Have good relationships with our friends.
3.Eat healthy, nutritious foods.
4. Exercise and play everyday.
5. Get plenty of rest.
A special thank you to the Kindergarteners at Noah’s Ark!Photos taken by Jessica Crawford.Permission was granted to photograph children. Thanks to the parents who let me use their wonderful children in this Electronic Text for Health Literacy©!
